For pleasant weather and greenery, March to June is the best time to visit Manali. For snow, December to February is magical (but cold and some passes shut). October–November is crisp and clear with thin crowds; the monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings landslide risk on the highways.
| When | Weather | Crowd | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar–Jun | Pleasant, some snow early | Peak | Best overall; summer escape from the plains |
| Dec–Feb | Cold, snowfall | High | Snow lovers; carry chains/woollens |
| Oct–Nov | Crisp, clear | Medium | Beautiful, fewer crowds |
| Jul–Sep | Monsoon | Low | Landslide risk on highways |
The nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu, ~50 km) with limited flights; most travellers fly to Chandigarh and drive (~8 hours), or take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi (~12–14 hours). The drive up the Beas valley is part of the experience.
Manali is budget-friendly outside peak weekends. Per-person, per-day:
Hostels in Old Manali, buses, café food
Good hotels, taxi sightseeing, activities
Riverside resorts, premium stays
Ballpark for a 5-day trip: ₹14,000–28,000 per person incl. travel (comfort, ex-Delhi).
Manali is very vegetarian-friendly — Himachali veg thalis, plus the famous Old Manali café scene (Israeli, Italian, pizza, plenty of veg/vegan). Jain food is available; just ask in advance at smaller places.
Manali is safe, but the hazards are mountain-specific: winding roads, sudden weather, mild altitude at the Atal Tunnel/Rohtang, and fast-moving river currents. Avoid the Beas riverbed edges.
December to February for snowfall in Manali, Solang and beyond the Atal Tunnel. For pleasant weather and greenery, choose March to June.
