Manali in 5 days: a family itinerary that works for everyone

Planning Manali as a family usually runs into the same problem: the kids want Solang Valley adventure sports, the grandparents want a slow, low-effort trip, and someone in between just wants the cafés and views. The good news — Manali is compact enough that one 5-day plan can genuinely suit all three, if you sequence the days right.

Day 1: Arrive & Old Manali — the easy day for everyone

A short-walk day by design: Hadimba Devi Temple (flat, shaded, wheelchair/stroller manageable) and café-hopping in Old Manali. Good for grandparents to settle in and acclimatise a little before anything more active.

Day 2: Solang Valley — the day for kids and teens

Paragliding, the ropeway and zorbing live here — the highlight for kids and teens. Grandparents or anyone not keen on activities can stay at the cable-car viewpoint or a valley-view café rather than skip the day entirely; it is easy to split the group for a few hours and reconvene.

Day 3: Atal Tunnel & Sissu — snow that works for all ages

This is the day that tends to please everyone at once: snow (even outside peak winter, near the tunnel/Sissu side) without serious trekking. Mostly car-to-viewpoint, minimal walking, and a proper "we saw the Himalayas" moment for grandparents and kids alike.

Day 4: Naggar — the slow day

Naggar Castle and the Roerich Art Gallery are gentle, unhurried, and a good pace-down day after Day 2/3 — ideal if grandparents need a lighter day before travel, while older kids can explore the riverside separately.

Day 5: Kasol (optional) or a slow morning + departure

Treat this as optional rather than compulsory: a Kasol day trip suits teens/young adults who want one more "different" spot, while a family with young kids or elderly members may prefer a relaxed Mall Road morning before heading back.

Altitude and safety notes for families

  • The Atal Tunnel area sits at real altitude — mild breathlessness is normal; keep young kids and elderly members hydrated and take it slow.
  • Fix paragliding/activity prices and duration upfront at Solang — overcharging is common and negotiable in advance, not after.
  • Stay well back from the Beas riverbed — currents are stronger than they look, and this is the most common safety issue reported in Manali.

On cost: a comfortable 5-day family trip (good hotels, taxi sightseeing, activities for the kids) runs roughly ₹14,000–28,000 per person from Delhi, per our full Manali itinerary — which also covers how to reach, veg/Jain food, and month-by-month weather in more depth.

Every family is a different mix of ages and energy levels — treat the day order above as a default, not a rule. Swapping Day 4 and Day 5, or dropping Kasol entirely, changes nothing else.

FAQs

Split days by energy instead of trying to please everyone at once: temples and sightseeing in the mornings, Mall Road cafés in the evenings, and adventure activities like paragliding or Solang Valley as their own dedicated day. A day-wise plan everyone can opt into beats a single itinerary that compromises on everything. [Plan your family's exact trip](/plan).

5 days works well: 2 for local sightseeing (Old Manali, temples), 1 for Solang Valley or adventure activities, 1 for a Kasol or Naggar day trip, and 1 as a buffer or travel day. It is enough to cover the highlights without rushing any age group.

Roughly ₹14,000–28,000 per person from Delhi for a comfortable trip — good hotels, taxi sightseeing and kids' activities included. Budget nearer ₹14,000 with shared taxis and simpler stays, or ₹25,000+ for private cabs and better hotels throughout.
